Garden Tips August 2015
Spring is around the corner, so there's a lot to look forward to and some easy tasks for this month!
The vegetable and fruit gardens:
-
Soil - prepare areas for planting, dig in remaining green crops and add Living Earth organic certified Compost to soil that is heavy and compacted
-
Some don'ts - Unless you have a glasshouse don't go rushing out to find tomato, capsicum and eggplant seedlings! But do begin to sow seed indoors ready to plant out late September; basil and beans are NOVEMBER crops!
-
Pruning - last chance to make cuts and shape fruit trees, unless they're already flowering, trim up blueberry bushes
-
Living Earth Organic Liquid Compost- Continue to regularly apply (every two weeks) to all crops
-
Some do's - Start seed potatoes sprouting by placing on a tray in a warm dry area; plant another crop of brassicas - cabbage, broccoli and Bok Choy - these will be ready before the heat of summer hits.
-
Copper Spray - A great natural fungicide to clean up fruiting plants and help resistance to diseases - black spot and mildews that come knocking in feisty spring weather.
-
Feed Flowers - feed the flower garden with sheep pellets, particularly around the roses.
White out - Digger loves planting whites and silvers in the garden, to enhance winter! These white stemmed birches show up well in dull light and white flowers and silver foliage are great to plant on pathways to 'show the way' when it's dark. Liven your winter garden by planting white flowering camellias, azaleas, hellebores and early flowering bulbs such as snowdrops.
Loving Lime - Fresh new foliage is lime coloured and it's the emergence of spring. But many of these new leaves, such as hostas, require protection from slugs and snails. Limes of course, Hellebore sternii and Euphorbia bract all bring great lime colour to the garden!
Bare Earth is full of promise - Digger's dog is waiting for
the birth of the tulips in this pot - we'll keep you posted! Plus watch those
elephant garlic over the next month!
Lawn Care: August can be a tricky time of the year for your lawn. This is because we don't really know exactly what weather we are going to get. Fertilise with Prolawn Garden Supreme to keep your lawn thick and healthy, you may find your growth rate increase so it is important to keep on top of your mowing. If we have a mild August you may consider a broadleaf weed spray with Prolawn Broadsword to take out any undesirable species that may have come into your lawn during winter.
