What to plant in September
Your soil is at 'perfect pitch' for planting, so let's go!
- With warmer temperatures and plenty of moisture still in the soil,
September is a great month to give new plants a 'stress-free' start in
life.
- Plant the 'cut and come again' lettuces - rocket, miner's lettuce and
mesclun mixes, put in a crop of snow peas and onions and radishes. However,
with tomatoes, capsicums and zucchini, the more sheltered and sunny the garden,
the more successful they will be. It may pay to wait a month before planting
the tender types.
- Plant trees, shrubs and perennials. Remember the basics - plant into
friable, well composted soil or into Living Earth Garden Mix. Soakplants in a
bucket of water for ten minutes before planting and, if compacted, loosen the
roots before placing in the hole.
- Use stakes: It's spring and there are lots of windy days, so stake tall
plants well. A plant whose roots can move about in the soil won't thrive.
