Inner City Rustic Charm with Franc Landscapes

Inner City Rustic Charm with Franc Landscapes

We joined Kevin from Franc Landscapes in Morningside to view one of their recently completed projects - a front garden renovation.

Check out the video below to see how Kevin and his team transformed this space into a functional entertaining area full of rustic charm, with a hint of gallic style.

Bonjour Kevin, and thank you for the opportunity to view this lovely front garden renovation. Firstly, what was the client brief, and what were the issues with the existing site?

"When Tanya and Shane reached out to us about reworking their front yard, we quickly arranged a site visit to discuss their needs and vision in detail. The brief was to completely transform their under-utilised front area, which at the time featured a broken, outdated concrete patio and an uneven, lower grass section that stepped awkwardly up to the street."

"We reimagined the space with a fresh new surface, full regrading for better flow and usability, thoughtful garden additions, and clean sleeper borders to define and enhance the area."

You've made great use of rustic railway sleepers, hoggin, pebbles and mulch to add contrast and structure to the space - what influenced your choice of materials for this project?

"Our aim was a practical yet rustic design built to last. Sleepers secured to concreted posts make for incredibly stable, long-lasting edging and features. Hoggin provides that hard-wearing, pale-toned path surface with superb drainage. We used Forest Floor Mulch in the beds for its lovely natural vibe - it holds water beautifully and breaks down to nourish the soil steadily. The entrance path features river pebbles that tie in perfectly with the grey pavers, giving everything a harmonious, classic feel. It's a great mix of enduring, traditional materials that look fantastic together."

You produce some entertaining and informative videos on Instagram that highlight the 'Method behind the Craft'. How important is it to follow proper processes when putting in new landscaping?

"Transparency in our craft is a core focus for us-we love openly sharing the methods, standards, and best practices that go into every project we deliver. That's exactly why we created our popular Instagram series, 'The Method Behind the Craft', where we break down our processes step by step to educate and show the real work that happens behind the scenes. Many of the most important landscaping structures remain hidden beneath the surface, yet they're what deliver lasting performance and longevity over time."

"On this particular job, for example, the hoggin and paver surfaces sit on a solid GAP 20 compacted base, while the sleepers are securely bolted to concreted posts. These foundational details provide exceptional stability and ensure the space holds up beautifully for years to come. You can catch more episodes and behind-the-scenes insights like this on our Instagram to see how we approach every build with the same attention to detail."

Finally, what advice do you have for homeowners looking to improve their outdoor spaces?

"As a landscape contractor here in Auckland, my top advice for homeowners looking to improve their outdoor spaces is simple: invest in quality from the start-don't chase the cheapest quote."

Advice for Auckland homeowners improving outdoor spaces

"The lowest price often means shortcuts on materials, poor drainage (a big issue with our rainy climate), subpar workmanship, or plants that won't thrive long-term. Quality costs more upfront, but it delivers a beautiful, functional space that lasts years with minimal issues and adds real value to your home."

"Get detailed quotes from experienced locals who specialise in Auckland conditions. Check their recent portfolios, talk to past clients, and choose someone who truly listens to what you want rather than pushing a one-size-fits-all design."
