Maximising Compact Urban Spaces - with Mayfair Landscapes

As property footprints get smaller, good landscape design becomes even more important, to maximise the potential of these compact spaces.

A good example of this is a just completed project in Greenhithe carried out by Gareth and his team at Mayfair Landscapes.

The owners were seeking privacy and a more functional courtyard space. The existing grass lawn was too small to be useful (and tricky for the lawnmower guy to access!). Gareth’s solution was to install raised planter boxes with hedging along the perimeter - providing a screen from the street.

The lawn was replaced with a line of pavers laid in a bed of GAP 7, haunched with builders mix and topped with a layer of white chip. Underneath it all is a layer of weedmat to keep the pebbles clean and free from weeds.

The garden boxes were filled with Premium Garden Mix and then planted with Ficus instant hedge. A top layer of mulch was added to finish the look and help retain moisture as the hedging gets established.

Taking just over a week to complete, the finished result is an urban courtyard that offers privacy, clean lines and a much more functional space for the owners.

As we head into summer - Gareth’s advice to the owners was to keep watering the hedging, as moisture in raised planter boxes can drain away quickly. Longer daylight hours and spring winds can also dry out soil, so an application of mulch will help lock in the moisture.
