Waiheke Island: Infinite Landscape Design

For more than a decade, Matt Williams has been shaping some of Waiheke Island’s most distinctive outdoor spaces through his company, Infinite Landscape. Williams and his team have built a reputation for creating landscapes that respond to the island’s unique environment while reflecting the vision of each client. Their approach combines practical problem-solving with thoughtful design, using locally sourced materials and native planting to produce landscapes that feel as though they have always belonged.

A Waiheke garden inspired by Mudbrick

One of Infinite Landscape’s latest projects exemplifies that philosophy. Completed over the course of almost a year, the residential landscape was designed around a simple but inspiring brief: create a garden that captured the character of Waiheke, drawing inspiration from the island’s iconic Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant aesthetic.

To achieve this, Williams incorporated signature elements including olive trees, lavender and locally sourced Waiheke stone, blending Mediterranean influences with native planting to create a landscape that feels firmly rooted in its surroundings. The result is a garden that balances the island’s natural beauty with timeless design.

Turning an overland watercourse into a landscape feature

One of the site’s biggest challenges was an overland watercourse that ran directly through the property. Rather than treating it as an obstacle, Williams and the project team transformed it into one of the landscape’s defining features.

“This was an interesting one,” Williams says. “There’s a lot of water that comes down through this valley. Rather than conventional plastic piping, we’ve gone with an open swale using the local rock and wetland planting. The water runs through freely and it ends up turning a really negative part of the property into a feature.”

The project relied heavily on locally sourced materials that complemented the surrounding environment. Williams and his team spent many hours carefully hand-selecting Waiheke stone from a local quarry before individually placing each piece around the swale, integrating native wetland planting throughout.

Hardwood sleepers were incorporated into the design, while Waikato Fleck aggregate was chosen for the courtyard and pathways. “The client wanted a simple stone courtyard, so we’ve gone with the Waikato Fleck, which is much easier underfoot than the local aggregate but still keeps that nice colouring.” Williams says.

Beyond the landscaping itself, Williams credits careful planning and strong supplier relationships for helping projects run smoothly. Infinite Landscape has worked alongside Central Landscape Supplies Waiheke for more than 12 years, allowing the team to minimise transport logistics by relying on prompt deliveries directly to site. This approach keeps crews productive while ensuring materials are available when needed. “I’m always planning ahead with my projects, so I touch base with them and let them know what we’re going to need in advance. They’re really good at sourcing product and getting it delivered.”

The effort paid off. “The clients were really, really happy,” Williams says. “It’s been a long project… but they’re here and they’re just loving it.”

For Williams, the project is an example of what can be achieved when practical engineering, thoughtful design and an understanding of place come together. By embracing the site’s natural characteristics rather than fighting them, Infinite Landscape has delivered a garden that is both highly functional and unmistakably Waiheke.
